Possible Salmonella Contamination in Frozen Shrimp Led to Recall of Shrimps Sold Globally

Salmonella is mainly a group of bacteria which can cause fever and gastrointestinal infection, is called as Salmonellosis. It is mostly spread by the food handles which do not take care of the hygiene while processing or packaging the food. People who day to day have direct contact with some animals in poultry cam spread salmonella from the animals to food. Maintaining no hygiene standards/ cleanliness is the key cause to salmonellosis. The bacteria could also be spread through pets, as they are also capable of spreading when food consumed contaminated with salmonella. The symptoms develop post 12 to 72 hours of infection. The infection usually lasts for three to four days, in other case people recover without any kind of treatment.

Salmonella can actually cause serious health problems and in turn cause poisoning. Some the symptoms as per the FDA are diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting. Some of the infection can led to diseases like endocarditis or arthritis. The people at most risk when infected with salmonella infection are children less than five years old, pregnant women and older adults.

In any kind of food factory or food processing unit, when the food item is not met the hygiene operating procedure, or quality control. The food item is again recalled back to the processing unit. In past many out breaks of salmonella were seen in United States. Most of the outbreaks were related contamination of poultry products, undercooked eggs, raw sprouts, nuts, pet foods, treats, dairy products and meat products

Such type of incidence occurred for the frozen shrimps which are sold at Meijer stores. A recall was been issued for the frozen shrimps which were sold at Meijer stores which may be contaminated with salmonella. The frozen shrimps were supplied by Avanti Frozen foods, later sold under different brand names such as Meijer, 365, Chicken of The Sea, Censea, Hannaford, and Open acres etc.

This has affected many products which were supplied in between December 2020 to February 2021. According to FDA the salmonella was first detected in an import sample in January. As per to the food and drug administration they have released the declaration from Avanti Frozen foods Pvt. Ltd. The company is expanding a prior recall which was issued on 25th June, 2021 due to take in orders of various sizes of cooked, peeled or frozen shrimps. The shrimps are been sold in different unit sizes to avoid contamination of salmonella while processing.

According to The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they have quantified six people being infected with the salmonella contamination due the shrimps. As per reports four patients in Nevada and two in Arizona.

Some of the steps which can be taken for preventing foodborne illness are frequently Washing and sanitizing the surfaces, regular sanitizing or washing of hands. Children, pregnant women or people with weak immune system should avoid consumption of raw sprouts.

Thus, in order to avoid contamination of salmonella, there should be regular practice of hygiene in our day-to-day life.
