As part of its efforts to enhance its influence in the area, China has sought to join a crucial Asia-Pacific trade deal.
The action comes only one day after the announcement of a landmark security agreement between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Previous President of USA Donald Trump, on the other hand, pulled the US out of it in 2017.
After China formally sought to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), Japan said it should have to decide if the globe’s second-major economy fulfils the CPTPP’s “very high requirements.”
In a statement to New Zealand’s trade minister, Damien O’Connor, Chinese Minister Of commerce Wang Wentao filed China’s membership request for the free trade pact, the Chinese government announced late Thursday.
The pact’s administrative headquarters are in New Zealand.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Mr. Wang and Mr. O’Connor then conducted a call conversation to examine the future stages after China’s request.
The initial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) was conceived by then-President Barack Obama as a socio-economic union to counter China’s growing dominance in the Asia-Pacific region.
Following Mr. Trump’s withdrawal from the agreement, Japan took the lead in negotiating the CPTPP.
In 2018, 11 nations, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and, Chile accepted the CPTPP.
Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Vietnam, Peru, Singapore, and Malaysia are among the other members. The United Kingdom is in talks to join. If China participates, the organization’s overall population is expected to rise to almost two billion people.
China’s government has vowed to boost commodities imports, but opponents claim it is not following through on commitments to open banking and other service sectors when it signed the World Trade Organisation in 2001.
It was previously known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and it was viewed as a key economic counterbalance to China’s dominance in the parameters.
Japan, which is chairing the CPTPP this year, said it will confer with member nations before responding to China’s proposal, but it did not give a proper plan for performing so.

The United Kingdom officially began CPTPP accession talks in June, and Thailand has also expressed interest.
Turning out to be a member of the CPTPP would be an enormous gain for China, particularly after it inked the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) free merchandise deal with 14 other nations in November.
